Missouri is considered one of the most beautiful states in the Midwest. With access to the Mississippi River, Missouri has several beautiful state parks and natural wonders. The state is also deeply connected with pioneer days, as it was once the stomping ground for Lewis and Clark during their famed expedition.

Several cities in Missouri feature registered historic sites and offer visitors a unique experience.

1) Springfield

Springfield is a charming small town known as the “Birthplace of Route 66”. This Midwest town is located in the Ozark Mountains and features a cornucopia of state parks, such as Bennett Spring State Park. Bennett Spring State Park is a great place to visit if you’re a nature lover interested in hiking, fishing, or camping.

2) Arrow Rock

Arrow Rock is a beautiful, historic village located right on the banks of the Missouri River. This charming town is the perfect location for a weekend getaway. The entire village is considered a historic landmark given its ties to the days of western expansion.

Several historic sites in the town are part of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. Some popular attractions to visit include the J. Huston Tavern and the Arrow Rock Lyceum Theatre, both of which are the oldest of their kind in the state.

3) Caledonia

Caledonia is a historic village that allows visitors to step back into time. This town is nearly unchanged since the 19th century and features Greek revival-style buildings. Caledonia offers visitors a historic walking tour of 33 buildings and dwellings.

Caledonia is also near several state parks such as Elephant Rocks State Park, Washington State Park, and Taum Sauk Mountain State Park. 

4) Boonville

Boonville is a charming town located right on the Missouri River, named after the famed pioneer, Daniel Boone. The town is conveniently located halfway between St. Louis and Kansas City and features several historic buildings. Boonville is also situated along the Katy Trail State Park, a must-see for biking, hiking, and nature enthusiasts.

Along with offering several shops and restaurants, Boonville also hosts a variety of festivals throughout the year. These include the Heritage Days Festival, the Missouri River Festival of the Arts, the Christmas in Historic Boonville Festival, and many more.

5) Bonne Terre Mine

Bonne Terre Mine is a national historic site featuring the world’s largest freshwater dive resort. Developed in 1860 as the first part of the St. Joe Minerals’ lead mine network, Bonne Terre Mine features a billion-gallon, crystal clear lake. This natural wonder was named one of America’s Top 10 Greatest Adventure Experiences by National Geographic.

Visitors can traverse the expansive lake on an underground boat and walking tour. Certified scuba divers can go diving in Bonne Terre Mine and explore this underwater world.
